Watercolor, Fall 2012
Boo.
The problem with living in a dorm is that I'm for the most part restricted to sketching and digital art. Watercolor is one of my favorite mediums to mess around with, but it's not something I'd do in a tiny room like mine. That being the case, this is something I did a while ago, and I found the file sitting on my hard drive. I re-balanced the colors quickly (the lighting when I had photographed it was much too warm) and threw it up on here. The actual version measures around two feet wide by three tall.
Anyways, about the actual painting. I was a fan of the Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark book series when I was younger (i.e. 10), and in particular the illustrations done by Stephen Gammell. Suffice to say, those pictures alone were inspiration enough for me to produce this monstrosity and others beside it. Of all the creepy artwork I've done, though, this is likely my favorite.
The long drips of 'hair' (tendrils?) weren't done with a brush. I did this piece propped up on an easel, letting the paint flow freely with gravity. For the 'hairs' coming out the back of the head, neck, and body, I would put heavier dollops of paint then vigorously blow to spread it in a wild, erratic manner. I threw in some splashes of pale blues and greens to suggest a gaunt, sickly complexion, and went in with a black pen to further bold some lines.
And that's how ya make a spooky picture.
